About the Project

Building on its 30-year history of providing free and objective information on ethical finance and corporate activity to the public, the EIRIS Foundation has undertaken a project conducting research into corporate activity in Crimea and Palestine. The project does not cover investment in Israel or Russia. It covers only the Occupied Palestinian Territories (the West Bank and Gaza) and the Crimean Peninsula.

The result is the EIRIS Foundation’s online database of the companies active in Crimea and Palestine, and a guide to help companies carry out human rights due diligence in these or other occupied territories.

International law recognizes occupation as a form of conflict, and occupying governments often use economic activity to help secure and maintain their control of territory. However, the project does not take or encourage a stance of opposing investment in occupied territories or in the occupiers in general, nor in Israel or Russia in particular. The database is presented in the context of information and analysis about the territories’ international trade policies.

The project provides businesses, civil society, media and the investor community with access to objective and comprehensive information about corporate operations in two occupied territories (now in its third iteration) and with guidance that companies can use to carry out human rights due diligence in relation to these operations. Investors can use the guidance in clarifying their own expectations of companies in their portfolios which operate in these territories.

Access to such objective and independent research increases transparency, empowers investors and enhances global knowledge and understanding about investment in occupied territories.

This project has been made possible through the generous support of the Open Society Foundations and we welcome your feedback at [email protected].
